Yvonne J. Gallagher, 94, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, 6:00 am, August 30, 2016, at home. Yvonne was born May 27, 1922, in Bolton, Lancashire, England to Florence (O’Neill) and Richard Allen.
Yvonne married Thomas Gallagher of La Porte, Indiana, March 3, 1945, St. Edmund’s Catholic Church, Bolton, England. She came to America in 1946 on the Queen Mary. Thomas preceded her in death October 30, 1983, also preceded by Jessica Whittaker(sister) and Richard Allen Jr.(brother). She leaves six daughters Maria (Joe) Travis of La Porte, Kathleen Gallagher of La Porte, Patricia Gallagher (Ray Wisinski) of Phoenix, Arizona, Sharon (Barnett) of Longwood, Florida, Maureen (Manny) Bejar of Hebron, Indiana, and Dianne (Grant) Darby of La Porte. Also, seven grandchildren, Tim and Patrick Graf, Erin, Caitlin, and Brian Barnett, Jessica (Darby) Daniel and Sarah Heath, then seven great grandchildren, Jade, Reme, Kylie, Mason, Paige and Clayton and one due in October.
In Bolton, England, Yvonne served in the National Fire Service during WWII, & worked at Peel Knowles Mill. In La Porte she worked at Ripco for 10 years, and also volunteered at St. Joseph’s school until its closing. Throughout the years, Yvonne was a babysitter to her grandchildren, and many other children, who all enjoyed her love of playing and having fun. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, The Madonna Circle of St. Peter’s Rosary Society, The Fortnightly Club in La Porte, and the WWII War Brides Association.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Church, Saturday at 10 a.m. Family and friends may gather at 9 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home.
Viewing will be held Friday evening from 4-7 p.m. at Frank Keszei Funeral Home, ESSLING CHAPEL, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Friday evening. Burial will follow the Mass in Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte.
