Ricki "Rick" Hensell Obituary

Ricki LaRue Hensell, known affectionately as Rick to all who knew him, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026.

Born on May 14, 1948, Rick’s life was one of service, love, and vibrant enthusiasm that touched the hearts of many throughout his 77 years.

Rick was a devoted husband to his wife, Joan, with whom he shared a beautiful and inspiring partnership. Together, they raised a family that was the center of Rick’s world. He was a loving father to his daughter Michelle (Bill) Didion and sons Daniel (Richole Schultz) Hensell and David (Jenn Cowger) Hensell. His role as a grandfather to Jonathan, Anthony, Marie, Joseph Didion, Taylor, Austin, Hannah, Daniel Jr Hensell, Destiny Avila,Alice Robbins, and Aria Hensell brought him immeasurable joy. Rick also had the blessing of being a great-grandfather, a title he wore with pride and joy.

Rick’s surviving brothers Robert (Cathy) Hensell, Randy (Judy) Hensell, and sister Pam (Terry) Callahan will remember him for his unwavering support and brotherly love. His family was his fortress, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

A patriot at heart, Rick served his country with honor in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His commitment to his nation was a profound part of his character, and it instilled in him a sense of duty that he carried throughout his life. After his military service, Rick built a career that included dedicated years at Whirlpool, Brinks Armored Cars, and as a dealer trade driver with Chrysler. His work ethic and jovial nature set a standard that many aspired to emulate.

Rick was a member of Holy Family Parish, St Peter Church all his adult life and was active in many church events, volunteering and chairing the dessert auction as a highlight. He lived his faith through his actions, and his light shone brightly within his community.

An avid Green Bay Packers fan, Rick’s enthusiasm for his team knew no bounds. His truck, painted in the iconic Packer colors with a big green G, was recognizable to everyone in town. His love for baseball was just as strong, coaching various leagues in LaPorte and Kingsbury, and serving as president of the Kingsbury league. Rick also enjoyed fishing, and spent many summers teaching his sons and grandchildren and sharing his love of the hobby with them.

Rick’s love for his dog Milo was renowned, as was his joy in spending time with his family. Whether attending his grandchildren's events or simply sharing a meal together, these moments were precious to him. For a decade, Rick donned the red suit and white beard, playing Santa for the city of LaPorte, bringing smiles and laughter to children and adults alike.

Ricki LaRue Hensell's legacy is one of love, service, and joy. He never met a stranger and was always ready to share a joke or a moment with anyone who crossed his path. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by those who loved him, and the impact he made on his community will not be forgotten. As we say goodbye to Ricki, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man dearly loved.
