Phyllis Cowgill Obituary

Phyllis Jean Cowgill, a lifelong resident of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2024, at the age of 84. Born on April 30, 1940, Phyllis was the cherished daughter of John and Bernice (Parent) Slater. She grew up in the warm embrace of a loving family and carried that warmth throughout her life.

Phyllis's life was marked by a loving marriage to Gerald L. Cowgill on May 9, 1959, a union that flourished over the years and was blessed with children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Gerald survives her, a testament to their enduring love. She was a devoted mother to her children, Kim Edwards and her husband John, Marsha Young and her husband Todd, and Gerald Cowgill, son. Phyllis was not only a parent but also a best friend to her daughter Kim, sharing an unbreakable bond that transcended the typical mother-daughter relationship.

Her legacy continued through her grandchildren, Josh Edwards, Ricky Harmon, Joey Harmon and his wife Amanda, and her great-grandchildren, Ciara Edwards, Liam Harmon, Jaxon Harmon, and Ryder Harmon. Each of them held a special place in her heart, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Phyllis also leaves behind her sister, Patricia Vanschoyck of Massachusetts, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Sarah (Randy) Hemminger and Bradford Vanschoyck, who will remember her fondly.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her siblings Don Slater, George Slater, and Dorothy Slater, as well as her parents. Her family takes comfort in knowing she is reunited with them in eternal peace.

A dedicated homemaker, Phyllis created a warm and welcoming home for her family and friends. Her home was a reflection of her loving, kind, and thoughtful nature. She took great pride in her role and was always there to offer a comforting word or a home-baked treat to those in need.

Her involvement in the community included membership in the P.N.A. and participation in the Wednesday mixed doubles bowling league, where she enjoyed the camaraderie and friendly competition. Phyllis had a passion for shopping, always on the lookout for the perfect gift or a special treat for her loved ones.

Phyllis's love for baking was well-known, and she was especially renowned for her delicious cookies and cakes. Her kitchen was often filled with the sweet aromas of her latest creations, and family gatherings were never complete without one of her delectable desserts.

graveside service at Springville Cemetery will be announced.
