Pete Carrera Obituary

Pete S. Carrera, of Union Mills, Indiana, affectionately known as Pete, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2025, at the age of 83 in Munster, Indiana.

Born on September 4, 1941, in Clinton, Indiana, to the late Pete and Pauline (Lopez) Carrera, Pete's life was a testament to the values of hard work, devotion to family, and service to his community.

Pete's journey began in the heartland of Indiana, where he grew up learning the value of a day's work on the family farm. His love for education led him to Indiana State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Education Degree in 1963. Pete's dedication to teaching shaped the lives of countless students during his tenure as an Industrial Arts School Teacher with the Duneland School Corporation and previously with the Portage School Corporation.

On December 19, 1964, Pete married the love of his life, Mary Ellen English, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and the joy of raising their two sons, Chris (Michele) Carrera of Anderson, Indiana, and Paul (Stacey) Carrera of Union Mills, Indiana. Pete was a doting grandfather to Dylan, Derek, Jacob, Austen, Nick, and Tony, who will forever cherish their memories with him. His sister, Toni (Louis) Bonacorsi of Nappanee, Indiana, and his significant other, Sheila Robertson of Union Mills, Indiana, also survive him. Pete was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Ellen, and his sister, Felicia Miller.

A lifelong farmer, Pete's passion for the land was evident in his tireless work and the care he took in tending to his crops and livestock. His dedication extended to his spiritual life as a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church in Union Mills for over 50 years, where he served as an Elder and Deacon, embodying the faith-filled, generous, and selfless spirit that defined him.

Pete's interests and hobbies were as rich and varied as his character. He was an active member of the Lions Club in Union Mills, where he enjoyed fellowship and community service. His love for the outdoors was expressed through golfing, biking, camping, fishing, cards, and hunting. A snowbird at heart, Pete spent many years in Englewood, Florida, where he embraced the warmth and camaraderie of the community.

Music was a significant part of Pete's life, having learned to play the accordion from his father as a child. He continued to play throughout his life, entertaining many with his talent, particularly at the Little Italian Festival in Clinton. His love for classic cars was evident in his enjoyment and ownership of several Corvettes over the years.

Pete's legacy extends beyond his immediate family and hobbies; he was known for his contributions to decorating Union Mills for special events, demonstrating his commitment to his hometown. His stoic yet caring nature made him a pillar in the lives of those who knew him, and his presence will be profoundly missed.

As we bid farewell to Pete S. Carrera, we reflect on a life well-lived, marked by steadfast faith, unwavering love for his family, and a deep commitment to his community. Pete's memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, and the quiet strength that characterized his remarkable life.
