Mary Szilagyi Obituary

Mary Jane Szilagyi, affectionately known as Jane to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025, at the age of 99 in her hometown of La Porte, Indiana. Born on August 28, 1925, to Charles and Verneatha (Emigh) Goethals, Jane's life was a testament to her loving, spirited, and kind nature.

Jane's journey began in La Porte, where she grew up surrounded by the love of her parents and siblings. Her life was one of devotion and commitment, beautifully exemplified by her marriage to Elmer R. Szilagyi at St. Joseph Catholic Church on May 30, 1947. Their union was blessed with love, laughter, and the joy of raising a family until Elmer's passing on June 16, 2005.

A proud graduate of her local high school, Jane's early years were marked by her service as a welder during World War II, showcasing her strength and dedication to her country. Later, she embraced the roles of homemaker, farm wife, and school bus driver with the same fervor and care. Jane's involvement with the Pleasant Township Ladies Auxiliary further highlighted her commitment to her community and her desire to make a positive impact on those around her.

Jane's family was her pride and joy. She was a loving mother to Bob (Vicki) Szilagyi, Bonnie Jean (Larry) Rybicki, Cathy (Steve) Butiste, and Janet (Al) Cole. Her legacy continued to grow with her cherished grandchildren Leslie Farrell, Karen Rybicki, Tom (Kelly) Rybicki, Joe (Shirley) Butiste, Steve (Ali) Butiste, Matt (Lindsey) Cole, April (Paul Battista) Szilagyi, Zach (Michele) Szilagyi, Adam (Meng) Szilagyi, Seth Szilagyi, Morgan Mrozinski, Nate (Amber) Mrozinski, Erik (Brooklyn) Mrozinski, and Jessica Spiess. The family tree flourished with the addition of 19 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense happiness and pride to Jane's life. A sister, Pat VanDierendonck also survives.

While Jane's family was at the center of her world, her interests and hobbies also played a significant role in her life. She was an avid bowler, a bingo enthusiast, and a lover of the game rummikub. Her passion for Notre Dame women's basketball was unwavering, and she cherished the moments spent at the casino with her beloved sister-in-law, Helen Szilagyi.

Jane's departure was preceded by the loss of her dear husband Elmer, her parents, her brothers Bob and Jack Goethals, her sister Evelyn Kennedy, and her grandson-in-law Tony Farrell. Her memory will be held close in the hearts of those who knew her, as her spirit and love continue to resonate through her extensive family and the many lives she touched.

As we say goodbye to Jane, we celebrate a life lived with unwavering love and kindness. Her legacy is one of enduring strength, boundless spirit, and a kindness that enriched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Jane Szilagyi's story is not one of an end but a beautiful reminder of the impact one life can have on so many. Her family would like to thank everyone from Settlers Place and Dunes Hospice for the care she received.
