Jon P. Miller August 29, 1963 – August 12, 2025 Jon P. Miller, 61, of La Porte, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2025.
He was born in La Porte, Indiana on August 29, 1963, to Walter J. and Patricia M. (Pekofske) Miller.
Jon graduated from La Porte High School and later went on to graduate from a professional diving school — a passion that reflected his love for the water. Growing up on Pine Lake, Jon was often found swimming, boating, or fishing with friends, soaking in the joys of lake life.
After the loss of his parents, Jon’s life took a difficult turn, and he became unhoused. He spent about a year as a guest at the Nest Community Shelter in Michigan City before returning to La Porte in October 2024 to be closer to his hometown, staying at Nest La Porte Community Shelter. Despite life’s hardships, Jon brought light and connection wherever he went.
He was famously known as “the guy with the deck of cards” — always ready to play a game of Rummy at a moment’s notice. A man of few words, Jon’s quiet presence could quickly open into laughter and camaraderie with just a simple, “I like to play cards.” His trademark phrases, “Oh shucks” or “Oh darn,” often signaled that his hand wasn’t going well, sparking laughter among friends.
Sundays at State Street Church, Jon’s eyes lit up — not just at the sweet table, but in the company of friends who felt like family. Jon and his friends would happily fill a plate, the joy of fellowship far outweighing dietary caution.
Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Patricia Miller; his brother, Jason Miller; as well as aunts, uncles, and many cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 6 PM, Thursday, August 28, 2025 at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.
Friends may visit from 5 PM to 6 PM prior to the Celebration of Life.
Cremation has taken place, and Jon’s remains will be laid to rest with his parents at Pine Lake Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Nest Community Shelter, 1001 W 8th Street, Michigan City, IN 46360, whose mission and compassion meant so much to Jon and others in need.
Though Jon faced challenges, he will be remembered for his quiet strength, his love of cards, his gentle humor, and the friendships he built. His story is a reminder that every life has value, and every person carries moments of joy worth sharing.
