Obituary for James Francis Miller LaPorte, Indiana – April 19, 2026 In the words of Jim Miller, “You never know what a day will bring.” On April 19, 2026, James Francis Miller, 76, passed away peacefully, surrounded by those who loved him most.
Jim was born on March 29, 1950, in LaPorte, Indiana, to Jack and Ruth Miller. He is survived by his brothers, Bob and Pat Miller, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Noreen Pieschala.
He grew up in LaPorte and graduated from LaPorte High School before continuing his education at Indiana Barber College in Indianapolis.
Upon returning home, Jim met the love of his life, Angeline Pieschala. The two were married on June 27, 1975, at Cummings Lodge, beginning a beautiful partnership that spanned 50 years. They recently celebrated their golden anniversary with a trip to Crete, Greece—one of their favorite places to visit together.
Together, Jim and Ange built a loving family. He is survived by his children: Barbara (Mike) Quigley, Dan (Cheri) Bernacchi, and Kristin (Scott) Smith. He was a proud grandfather to Britney (Gina) Bernacchi, Megan (Walker) Kluth, Brandan Bernacchi, Alyson (Anel) Quigley, and Bryce Bernacchi, and a great-grandfather to Ezra, Breanna, and Lollie. Jim was a devoted father and grandfather, always ready with guidance, humor, and unwavering support. His family was his greatest joy. Jim deeply adored his beloved dog, Chloee, and his cat, Phoebe.
Jim dedicated much of his working life to serving his community. He worked as a frozen food manager at Kroger in LaPorte for 16 years, followed by 22 years with LaPorte Community Schools. He especially cherished his time at Riley Elementary School, where he was known for always having Jolly Ranchers to share, a helping hand to offer, and a joke to brighten someone’s day. In addition, Jim operated Hermart’s Boat Rental on Stone Lake for many years. He took pride in staying active and often said, “Busy hands are happy hands.”
In retirement, Jim and Ange enjoyed traveling together, creating lasting memories on trips to destinations like Universal Studios—where they delighted in the Harry Potter experience—and Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Jim had a passion for Corvettes, music, and staying busy. He found joy in caring for his yard, fishing, and gardening.
He will be remembered for his quick wit, generous spirit, and willingness to help anyone in need. He was a member of Holy Family Parish, St. Peter Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 11 AM Thursday, June 4, 2026 at Holy Family Parish, St. Peter Church, 1101 Michigan Avenue, La Porte, Indiana, where family and friends may visit from 10 AM to 11 AM prior to the Mass.
A life well lived, and a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
Memorial contributions may be made to the La Porte County Animal Control & The Jane Bernard Animal Adoption Center, 2855 IN-2, La Porte, Indiana 46350.
