Gerald "Nick" Wagner DVM, affectionately known by many as Nick, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2025, in his hometown of La Porte, Indiana.
Born on July 12, 1942, to the late Gerald N. Wagner Sr. and Geraldine (Wirtner) Wagner, Nick's life was a testament to his spirited nature, loving heart, and humorous disposition. Nick's journey began in La Porte, Indiana, where he was raised alongside his siblings. His early education was completed at Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, laying the foundation for his lifelong commitment to learning and service. He furthered his education at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1968. He started his remarkable career in veterinary medicine in Louisville, Kentucky practicing on both large and small animals. He then moved to La Porte, Indiana dedicating his life to the care of small animals and the stewardship of Pine Lake Animal Hospital.
On June 25, 1966, Nick married Christine R. (Soetje) Wagner, his beloved wife and partner in life's journey. Their marriage was a beautiful blend of love, respect, and shared aspirations. They grew up knowing each other since grade school, with Nick chasing her for many years. Together, they nurtured a family that would grow to include their children, John, Marianne, and Michele, as well as their cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nick's family was the center of his world, and he took great pride in each of their accomplishments and individual paths.
Nick's life was rich with interests and community involvement. A devoted husband, he often lovingly referred to Christine as "Big Momma." Nick was an avid golfer, hunter, and snowmobiler. Nick and Christine shared a unique love for racehorses, which brought them joy and adventure. They owned several throughout his life including their winningest horse, Helicopter. His love for horses started at a very early age with his grandfather. He had passion for all things related to his alma mater, Purdue University. His pride as a Boilermaker was infinite as a supporter of the John Purdue Club, Purdue Athletics students, and the Veterinary School. He was an avid Purdue sports fan having season tickets for over 50 years, hardly ever missing a game. His vibrant personality was such that he never met a stranger, and he had the rare ability to light up any room with his presence.
Nick's legacy is carried on by his loving family, including his children, John (Daisy Rhinock) Wagner, Marianne (Bill) Watson, and Michele (Jon) Brakebush; his former daughter-in-law, Julie Wagner; his grandchildren, Angela (David) Pieronowski, Kristen, Matthew, Becca Watson, Faith and Cole Wagner, Jon (Tyanna), Nick (Claudia), Lexi, Drew, and Addi Brakebush; and his great-grandchildren, Brooks, Brayden, and J.J.
