Debra Lynn (West) Shelley

Debra Lynn Shelley, 70, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 26, 2026.

She was born on October 12, 1955, in La Porte to Allen Arthur and Norma (Schweder) West, who preceded her in death.

On August 9, 1975, Debra married her devoted and loving husband Bruce Shelley, who survives. Also surviving is her beloved daughter, Alisha (Eric) Krueger of La Porte; her siblings, Terry (Kathy) West Sr. of LaPorte, Dennis West of Westville and Christopher (Doris) West of Kingsford Heights; and a sister-in-law, Pamela (Eric Ehrhard) Shelley of Memphis. She is further survived by her lifelong friends who are more like “sisters” Phyllis (Ron) Bendiks of Valparaiso and Elaine (Steve) Cox of Houston. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Kenneth West.

Debra graduated from LaPorte High School in 1973 and from Purdue University North Central (PNC) in 1996 with an Associates Degree. She was determined to extend her education and fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse. Before she became a nurse, she worked at the local K-Mart for many years where she provided great leadership and exceptional customer service. She was a very hardworking and dedicated employee. She then became a dedicated Registered Nurse and served the community with care and compassion while working at La Porte Hospital for 13 years, later with the La Porte County Health Department, and lastly in in-home healthcare. Throughout her careers she gained many wonderful friendships.

Above all, Debra cherished her family and friends. As the oldest of five children, she naturally took on many responsibilities and always placed the needs of others before her own. She found joy in spending time with her family and friends doing all the things from playing Bingo, taking in a movie, visiting Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, camping at Potato Creek, attending local concerts at various venues and spending time antique shopping.

A celebration of Debra’s life will be held from 12 noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the American Legion Post #83, 228 E. Lincolnway, La Porte, Indiana.

Her laughter and unwavering love will remain with us all in our hearts and serve as a reminder to enjoy life to the fullest.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, La Porte.
