David James Obituary

David Anthony James, a man of courage, intelligence, and adventure, passed away on April 2, 2024, in Falls Church, Virginia, at the age of 81. Born on June 27, 1942, in La Porte, Indiana, David was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend who lived a life marked by service, dedication, and love.

David graduated from La Porte High School in 1961 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Finance from Indiana University in 1967. His thirst for knowledge and excellence led him to the University of Southern California, where he received an MBA in Finance in 1972. Further honing his skills, David became a Certified Acquisition Professional after attending the United States Defense Acquisition University in 2000.

David's distinguished career began with his role as a Communications Chief in the United States Air Force. He continued his service to the country as a Communications Chief and Contracting and Procurement Specialist in the United States Army Reserve. His expertise in finance and contracts led him to work with prestigious organizations such as the United States Office of Justice Special Programs, National Institutes of Health, National Reconnaissance Office, and the commercial banking sector. David retired as a Captain from the Armed Forces of the United States of America in June 2002, leaving behind a legacy of honor and commitment.

Throughout his career, David earned several certifications, including Professional Contract Manager from the National Contract Management Association (NCMA) and Federal Contracts Manager. His dedication to his field was matched by his commitment to service, as evidenced by his Top Secret/TS SSBI security clearance.

David was an active member of several organizations, including the Indiana University Alumni Association, where he served as President of the IU Alumni Club of Los Angeles. He was also a member of the USC Business Alumni Association, Military Officers Association of America, National Contract Management Association, and the Camp Perry Civilian Marksmanship Program. His faith played a significant role in his life, and he was a devoted member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in La Porte, Indiana, where he served as an Altar Boy in his youth, and Truro Anglican Church in Fairfax, Virginia.

David's interests were as diverse as his talents. He enjoyed East Coast Swing dancing, European travel, and was an avid sports fan, particularly of IU basketball. His passion for photography and cameras, computer programming, and Big Band music, especially the works of Buddy Rich and Stan Kenton, brought joy to his life and to those around him.

David was an incredibly loving and dedicated husband to his wife, Paula M. James, whom he married on May 16, 2016. He was the father to his sons, Michael T. James and Matthew D. James, and grandfather to Everett, Curtis, Joaquim, Diego, and Lucia James. David cherished his family's heritage and was the guardian of treasured heirlooms that held the family's history. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley A. Strojny and Tamar V. (James) Strojny.

Those who knew David will remember him for his loving nature, his dedication to family reunions and celebrations, and his support for programs that benefited his church and the military. David's curiosity, authenticity, and special character touched the lives of all who knew him. He lived every day to the fullest, leaving a lasting impact on his community and loved ones.

David Anthony James will be deeply missed, yet his legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him. His adventurous spirit, courageous heart, and intelligent mind have left an indelible mark on this world.
