Christine R. Wagner, a beacon of love and optimism, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2024, in her hometown of La Porte, Indiana. Born on December 3, 1941, also in La Porte, to the late Eldon and Rose (Frichtl) Soetje. Christine's life was a testament to her enduring kindness and the joy she brought to everyone around her.
Christine's journey began as a bright-eyed student in La Porte, where she graduated from La Porte High School in 1960. Her passion for education led her to Nazareth College in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where she earned a BS in teaching in 1964. Christine's commitment to shaping young minds teaching English took her to Missouri for her first teaching job, followed by positions at St. Mary’s in Michigan City and Central Catholic in Lafayette, Indiana. Her dedication to her students and her craft was evident in every lesson she taught and every life she touched.
On June 25, 1966, Christine married the love of her life, Nick Wagner. Their partnership was one of mutual respect, shared dreams, and unwavering support. Together, they raised a family that includes their children, John Wagner of New Carlisle, Ohio, Marianne (Bill) Watson of Warsaw, Indiana, and Michele (Jon) Brakebush of Oxford, Wisconsin. Christine's role as a mother was one she cherished deeply, instilling in her children the values of love, kindness, and optimism that she herself embodied.
Christine's legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren, Angela (David) Pieronowski, Kristen Watson, Matthew Watson, Becca Watson, Faith Wagner, Cole Wagner, Jon (Tyanna) Brakebush, Nick (Claudia) Brakebush, Lexi Brakebush, Drew Brakebush, and Addi Brakebush. Her great-grandchildren, Brooks, Brayden, and J.J., also brought her immense joy and pride. Christine's sister, Mary Carole (Bob) Weiner of Ashburn, Virginia, remembers her not only as a sibling but as a lifelong friend. Julie Wagner also survives.
Beyond her family and teaching career, Christine had a vibrant array of interests. She was an accomplished pianist, often filling her home with music and warmth. Her love for golf provided many hours of enjoyment and friendly competition. Christine and her husband shared a unique passion for racehorses, an interest that brought them both excitement and a sense of adventure. Moreover, Christine's love for Purdue was a family affair, a tradition and enthusiasm that united them all.
Those who knew Christine will remember her as a woman whose presence was a comfort and whose spirit was a guiding light. Her loving nature, kind heart, and unwavering optimism defined her as much as her achievements and hobbies. Christine's impact on the world was as gentle as it was profound, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
