Charles E. Crone, a devoted educator, husband, and father, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025, in La Porte, Indiana, at the age of 79.
Charles, a man known for his kind heartedness and unwavering support for the underdog, was born on June 25, 1946, in Gary, Indiana, to the late Guy and Mary L. (Garrett) Crone.
Charles's life was one marked by dedication and service. After completing a Master's degree and a post-master's degree in Education Specialist EdS from Purdue University, he embarked on a lifelong journey as an educator. His career began in Wanatah and Westville Schools, but it was in La Porte where he found his true calling, teaching at Park and Kingsbury Schools. His favorite role was educating inmates at the Indiana Department of Corrections, where he made a profound impact on the lives of many.
With a natural leadership ability, Charles rose through the ranks to become Principal at Topeka, Honeyville, and Mill Creek Schools. He continued to shape young minds as an Assistant Principal at Boston Schools and eventually retired from Crichfield School as Principal in 2007. His passion for education and his students was evident to everyone who knew him. Charles's Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life.
He was a member of the Holy Family Parish and Sacred Heart Church in La Porte. His commitment to his faith was matched by his involvement in the community, where he served on the Tree Committee with the City of La Porte and was a proud member of the Indiana Teachers' Association. An avid Purdue fan,
Charles's love for his alma mater was only matched by his love for cars, animals, and reading. He channeled his passion for helping others into running an At-Risk program for youth, always advocating for those less fortunate.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of over 54 years, Darlene (Potrzebowski) Crone, and his loving daughter, Laura, married to James Lewis. Charles was preceded in death by his brothers, James and Robert Crone, but his legacy of kindness, thoughtfulness, and courage will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Charles E. Crone was a man of great character, whose contributions to education and his community have left an indelible mark. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire those he has left behind. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we celebrate a life well-lived and the countless lives he touched.
