Cassandra L. Smith, known affectionately as Cookie to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2024, in La Porte, Indiana, at the age of 59. Born on October 23, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois, Cassandra was a beacon of light and love to everyone she encountered. Her warm presence and genuine affection for people were undeniable, leaving a lasting impact on those fortunate to have known her. Cassandra's life was a tapestry of loving relationships and dedicated service. She was a treasured daughter to her late mother, Catherine M. Harris-Booker, and her stepfather, Leo H. Booker. Her legacy continues through her adoring children, Carlos (Erin) Smith of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Lauren Smith, and Kaylyn Smith, both of Michigan City, Indiana. Cassandra's joy was multiplied by her cherished grandchildren, Henry, Nevaeh, Quinton, Carlos II, Ky'Lon, Dante, Laila, Zy'Air, and Royal, who will miss her deeply. She is survived by a loving cadre of siblings: Johnny O'Neal of Bakersfield, California; Bernice O'Neal of Cleveland, Ohio; Hosa Johnson of Chicago, Illinois; Anna Ruffner of Providence, Rhode Island; Irene Smith of Michigan City, Indiana; Carl Smith of Miami, Florida; and Melvina (Melvin Jefferies) Smith-Jefferies of Riverside, Rhode Island. Cassandra was preceded in death by her siblings Leonard O'Neal and Rachel Johnson, who surely welcomed her with open arms. Cassandra's professional life was characterized by her role as a waitress and server in the restaurant industry. She was most recently employed at Hacienda in Michigan City, where her reputation for warmth and exceptional service was well-known. Customers often requested her by name, not just for the meals she served, but for the friendly conversations and special connections she effortlessly created. Her colleagues and patrons alike will remember her for her loving nature and thoughtful gestures. Those who knew Cassandra would describe her as the embodiment of love and friendliness. Her thoughtful nature was not only evident in her professional life but also shone brightly in her personal interactions. She had the rare ability to make everyone feel like they were the most important person in the room, and her kindness was as natural as it was profound. Cassandra's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the community for the support and love they have received during this time. Her life was a beautiful journey that touched many, and her memory will be honored by all who were blessed to know her.
