After leaving Bloomington, she returned to La Porte County and worked for P.A.C.T. for several years. She then moved to Indianapolis where she worked for the State of Indiana Department of Mental Health. The state "loaned" her to the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. where she lived and worked for 3 years. Laura then took a position as business analyst with Fairfax County, Virginia where she worked until her death.
Surviving are her siblings, Richard (JoEllen) Schmitt of La Porte, Carol Weissert of Indianapolis, Martha (Steven) King of La Porte, and David Schmitt of La Porte. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Anthony Schmitt.

Laura was known as a kind and generous person with a wonderful sense of humor. She loved books, music, movies, and traveling with the Vagabond Princess Sue Barnes, Susie Stevenson, and her sister Martha. Laura was a Hoosier at heart and planned to return to Indiana where she planned to retire later this year to be closer to her family. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. A contribution to honor Laura may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
