Sophie K. (Kacmarek) Nowak

Sophie K. Nowak 87, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Tuesday July 7, 2015 at the University of Chicago Hospital.

Sophie was born October 1, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to Josef and Maria (Gorel) Kacmarek.
On September 1, 1956 in Chicago, Illinois she married Carl Robert Nowak who preceded her in death on August 29, 2007.

She retired from Howmet as an executive secretary after 28 years of service. 

Sophie is survived by her children, Robert (Christine) Nowak, Gregory (Robina) Nowak, Lynnette Nowak, Kelan (Lisa) Nowak, and Jacqueline (Kenny) Hargis, all of La Porte; grandchildren, Jennifer Grise, Jonathan, Ashley, Nikolaus, Nathan, Tyler, Brittany, Callie Nowak, Brittany Hargis, and Katie and Andrew Harrell; great grandchildren, Halo and Briella Nowak, Aven, Julian, and Kai Grise; a sister, Sister Mary Martha Kacmarek, OSB of Warren, Ohio; a brother, Joseph Kacey of Westchester, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Jo Zelezinski, Anna Kacmarek and Kathryn Rimdzius; and brothers, Michael, Andrew, and John Kacmarek. 

Sophie was a member of St. Joseph Parish and the Rosary Sodality in La Porte, Queen of All Saints Choir and Adoration Chapel of Queen of All Saints Parish in Michigan City, and a member of the supervisory committee at Generations Federal Credit Union in La Porte. She enjoyed researching genealogy after her retirement and was an avid shopper. 

Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Sunday, July 12, 2015, Essling Funeral Home-Frank L. Keszei Funeral Director, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana, where a Rosary will be recited at 6:30 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Monday July, 13, 2015, St. Joseph Catholic Church, La Porte, Indiana. Family and friends may gather at9 am Monday morning at Essling Funeral Home. Burial will be in St Joseph Cemetery, La Porte.
