Marilyn R. (Marsh) Sommers

Marilyn R. (Marsh) “Chubbins” Sommers, 74, of LaPorte, Indiana passed away September 8, 2016.  

She was born August 17, 1942 in Bayonne, New Jersey to Harry A. and Marion (Rocks) Marsh. Marilyn graduated in 1960 from St. Joseph Hill Academy on Staten Island, N.Y.  In 1977 she graduated with a Bachelor’s from the College of Staten Island and 1982 with a Master’s Degree in Education from Columbia University. She also received a second Master’s Degree from CSI in 1984.  Marilyn was a Special Education Teacher for 20 years and previously an airline hostess with U.S. Air.  

On December 28th, 1996, in West Lafayette, Indiana, Marilyn married Dr. Edward Sommers who survives.  Marilyn is also survived by a daughter, Tracy (Christian) Watson of Seattle, Washington, and a son, Frederick Edgar Jr. of Charleston, South Carolina from her first marriage to Frederick Edgar Sr.  She is survived by two stepsons, Eric (Joanne) Sommers of Bowling Green, Ohio, and Brian Sommers (Tracy) of Springboro, Ohio.  She is survived by four grandchildren, Leora Watson, Michael, Morgan and Anna Sommers. She also has many nieces and nephews in the New York City area.  Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Patricia Monerale and Harriet Ryan, and one brother, Robert Marsh.  

She was a member of the Teacher’s College Alumni Association, College of Staten Island Alumni Association, and the National Teacher’s Association. She attended First Lutheran Church of Hanna, Indiana.  

A Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, ESSLING CHAPEL, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana, where family and friends may visit from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  Burial of ashes will follow in the Hanna Cemetery.
