Helen A. Utroske

Under watchful care at the VNA Hospice in Valparaiso, Helen Utroske passed away Sunday, April 5.

Born in Racine, Wisconsin, the youngest child of Hallock and Elsie (Werner) Wardman, Helen wedded Arthur Utroske, February 29, 1940. All have preceded her in death, as have brothers Ralph and Robert. Children Frederick, Walter, Louise, Caroline, and Evelyn survive along with sister in law, Amy and seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family.

A graduate of Union Mills High School, Helen was the quintessential “mom” to her own children and all the neighborhood kids as well. At age of fifty she graduated from Valparaiso University, then for seventeen years taught kindergarten children at Westville School. She and husband Arthur played Mr. and Mrs. Santa for years throughout LaPorte County. Helen enjoyed traveling, tatting, playing euchre, reading, making puzzles, and sharing good times with faithful friends at Rumors Restaurant.

Always humble and self-effacing she never asked anything for herself but gave completely of herself to whatever was best for her family.

Essling Funeral home will handle arrangements, Frank L. Keszei, Funeral Director, 1117 Indiana Ave., LaPorte. Cremains will rest in the Hanna Cemetery, and remembrances will occur at a later date.
