Bertha L. (Huge) Schoof

Bertha L. Schoof, 92 of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Tuesday May 19, 2015.

Bertha was born to Wilbur and Dora (Felton) Huge on November 9, 1922 in La Porte, Indiana. Bertha was a graduate of Rolling Prairie High School, a member of St. John Lutheran Church, La Porte Hospital Retirees, a past president and secretary of St. John Lutheran Circle 6.  She retired from La Porte Hospital in 1986 from Central Services.

On September 13, 1947 in La Porte, Indiana Bertha married Virgil (Spike) Schoof who preceded her on September 22, 1983.

Bertha is survived by two daughters, Gail Lain of Lakeland, Florida, Carla (David) Antos, of La Porte, Indiana; and a son, Robert (Barb) Schoof of La Porte, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Jessica (Mike Robinson) Lain, Kyle (Elizabeth) Antos, Jon Antos, Matthew (Fiancée, Cassie Wolfe) Antos, Gretchien (Jason Pettis) Smith,  Christien (Heather) Schoof and Anita (Gordon) Pytynia; ten great-grandchildren, Steven and Xavier Robinson, Amaya, Isabelle, and Elin Antos, Robby and Caitlyn King (Fiancee Cole McIntosh), Bailey Pytynia and Ethan and Ivy Schoof; two great great-grandchildren, Sophie and Madelyn; five sisters, Lydia Livinghouse of La Porte, Indiana, Doris Martensen of Cassopolis, Michigan, Carol Jesswein of New Carlisle, Indiana, Carolyn Snider of Attica, Indiana, and Wilma Glasshagel, of Oxford, Ohio.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandson, Steven Lain, son-in-law, Terry Lain, three sisters, Elizabeth Bracken, Erma Dial, and Frances Grissamore.

Bertha had a special relationship with the Lord and He carried her through the end of her illness.    Her next love was her family, especially her grandchildren.   She had a talent for beautiful embroidery work she shared with her family and friends.   Bertha was a cross-word puzzle whiz, enjoyed reading and loved the Cubs!

Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2015, Essling Funeral Home, Frank L. Keszei Funeral Director, 1117 Indiana Avenue, LaPorte, Indiana.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2015, St. John Lutheran Church, LaPorte, Indiana, where family and friends may visit one hour prior to the funeral at the church.  Burial will follow in Patton Cemetery.
